As root, I simply mkdir /media/camera, and then I add the following line to /etc/fstab:
/dev/sda1 /media/camera vfat ro,user,noauto 0 0
Now of course I can mount the usb mass storage with mount /media/camera, but best of all I get a Camera icon in the Computer folder on my GNOME desktop.
